Following this weekend’s preseason game against the Detroit Lions, I asked the following question:
Did you see what you were looking for or hoping to see from the Miami Dolphins in this afternoon’s game? Where were the improvements and or regressions by the Dolphins that you saw in today’s game? What, if anything, about today’s game and what you saw disappointed you? What did you see in today’s game that you were happy to see or pleasantly surprised to see? In general, did you come away from this game feeling
better or worse about the 2025 version of your Miami Dolphins?
Below are some of your thoughts and answers-
TheRoo1 is ready to see those cuts already. There are also concerns about the secondary and OL depth.
In years past, teams made a first round of cuts on the Monday or Tuesday after the second preseason game. It would bode well for McD to do that now, he has at least 10 or 15 that he already knows wont make the team or squad, cut them now to give more reps to the ones you really want to look at.
I still see the O line as the biggest concern. Sav is a rookie and mistakes will be made, it’s part of the process. But the rest of the line still has issues. Paul was in for about a third of the team snaps last year, only drew a couple of penalties but is still learning. The others have injury histories that lend concern. This team only works when Tua is vertical, keeping him that way should be priority one.
The DB’s issues are still too murky to call. The starters may not be starters anywhere else in the league. But with Minkah playing center field, they may be able to be more aggressive knowing he has their back. We havent yet seen which Minkah we have 2021 or the 2023 version. If the former, the secondary could be serviceable.
Ewers is a hope for me. I really want the kid to excel, and he showed tremendous growth yesterday. On Wilson, Call it superstition or whatever, but The Jest seem like a place where QB’s go to be ruined and taking their castoff’s just doesn’t seem like a good idea.
Wildfin22 liked the improvement that they saw.
Saw improvement from Ewers. Wilson was about the same as last week.DL,LBs looked better in the second half. DBs still struggled except for the game winner int. OL didn’t seem to improve but I wasn’t really watching them as closely.Overall I think they played a tad bit better today.Looks like the backups played better than years before.
Dolphinsfan2021 has a trade proposal.
Seems like Dolphins have some good young OLB why not get them on the field and trade Chubb for a starting CB? We all know this roster isnt taking the team anywhere and without one good CB won’t win many games. Chubb has been one of the worst pickups in Dolphins history. If he actually is healthy then after a few games if he is playing good trade him and get a CB.
SlayerNation1 has some issues with play calling.
McDaniel’s only takeaway:
“The ridiculous ill-advised bubble screen in a conversion situation just so happened to work one time, so I will run it ad nauseam”
that is all Mike saw yesterday
cyberflea has a solid list of observations.
Things that stood out to me:
Fins front seven is the strength of the team on defense and will be a nightmare for opposing offenses during the season.
Set at WR with plenty of depth, Eskridge, T Washington and Wease Jr all played well. Fins have some tough cut/practice squad decisions to make. Henning did a great job on returns with the exception of a critical fumble.
The poor depth on the OL is a major concern. The group couldn’t open a pin hole for the RB’s and didn’t sustain their blocks for the QBs to throw deep. The season will be derailed if there are multiple injuries to the starters.
The secondary was shaky. This is another area of concern for the Dolphins. This is preseason, what I call backups season. It will get a whole lot tougher facing the better offenses and QBs like Allen, Jackson, etc. which will be far less forgiving than what the secondary has faced thus far in preseason.
TE Tanner Conner should be on the opening day roster over the inconsistent Julian Hill.
Zach Wilson posted some good numbers however he continues to have a tendency to miss on easy throws and holds the ball too long resulting in sacks. OL didn’t do him a lot of favors. He was nearly picked off again in this game. He was lucky he didn’t get picked six against the Bears. It’s been the story of his career thus far, good with plenty of bad to go with it. These consistent mistakes will cost you games during the regular season.
Quinn Ewers was impressive for the rookie compared to last week’s mediocre performance. Needs to be more consistent with his accuracy. All starters on the OL would help.
Dolfanjoe isn’t interested in what the “experts” have to say.
Not a bad group of young receivers. But could we afford to trade Hill off ? Don’t think so, he will be a needed tool for the season. TEs looked alright tonight. Ollie is for real, and showing he is also a pass catcher makes him that much more valuable. Defensive backs may improve by trade or waivers on cutdown day. Same goes for backup offensive line. We are not an embarrassing team and will win games ! Despite what some so called experts say !
Alpha6 is building a line of succession.
Quinn Ewers starts when Tua is released.
NeenerWhacker is concerned with the lack of balance in the roster.
This roster feels fresh – players on the sideline supporting each other’s success. Seems different this year, at least initially, from a culture perspective.
But my opinion is the roster itself is not constructed well. We have a few position groups in which we are going to have to cut some damn good players (WR and OLB). Then we have position groups that are seriously lacking (CB and depth OLine). I wouldn’t call what we have a well balanced roster. Teams will always have strengths and weaknesses, but we have excess and dearth.
LSC20Olney says if we are not headed to the Super Bowl, start the rebuild already.
My thoughts are simple, unless we think that we will win the Super Bowl, which we most probably will not, or even win a playoff game, which we haven’t since we signed high priced guys like Hill, we should trade him to the highest bidder for a solid defensive back and whatever else we can get. Let Waddle move to #1 and let some of these young guys play.
I watched Theo Wease Jr. play at Missouri against Oklahoma. I kept telling my son the same thing I said today, “throw the ball to Theo”. You feel me?
There seems to be some optimism coming out of the second preseason game despite the seemingly fanbase-wide concern about the depth of the offensive line and the secondary as a whole. Hopefully, we will see Grier and company sort through some of the cuts over the next couple of weeks to find some upgrades for positions on the roster lacking quality or depth. Thank you as always to each of you who took the time to visit our question of the day post and took the time to participate by answering the question or joining in on the daily discussion.
