The Lakers have played only one game this season in which their entire roster was available. However, according to Marcus Smart, the second time will be on Wednesday night against the Spurs.
Smart was the
only player out for LA’s most recent game against the Sixers. But after practice on Tuesday, he said that he intends to play in the NBA Cup quarterfinal.
Smart has been out for six games due to this back-related issue. The injury has been labeled as a left lumbar strain, lower back injury management and back spasms over that span.
So, clearly, his back has been bothering him. Considering he’s a 12-year veteran, it’s wise to be cautious with him. The Lakers have said they don’t consider Smart’s back issue a long-term concern.
His return should raise the defensive ceiling and the team’s chances of winning against San Antonio.
He is averaging a respectable 9.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. However, his impact comes from what he brings in defense and hustle.
Smart is one of the best defenders on this team and considering that the Lakers have a defensive rating of 116.2, which is 21st in the NBA, his return could only help them defensively.
If Smart is back, the Lakers will have a fully loaded roster, and head coach JJ Redick will have a chance to put out the very best against the Spurs with aspirations of advancing to the NBA Cup semifinals in Las Vegas.
Considering this is a knockout-round game, it’s good to see the Lakers respecting the cup and giving themselves the best chance to win it again.
