Soccer
No. 11 FSU soccer is set to take on No. 3 Virginia tonight at 6 p.m.:
Thursday marks the third time in four games, all in the last 15 days, that the Seminoles will play a team that was and still is ranked No. 3 or higher in the national polls. FSU opened the stretch on October 9 at Notre Dame, ranked No. 2 at the time and now No. 1. It continued at home vs. Stanford on October 16, a team that was and still is No. 2, before Thursday’s game at No. 3 Virginia. Additionally, eight of Florida State’s 10 conference games are against teams in the top 10 in the ACC standings, the most in the league and two more than any other team.
In a series that began in 1995, FSU is 12-21-8 all-time against Virginia, including 6-17-5 in ACC matchups, 4-7-4 at home, 2-9-1 on the road and 5-4-2 at a neutral site. Florida State is unbeaten in four straight and is 12-6-3 since a 2-1 win at the 2011 ACC Championships. That stretch includes a 3-0 win later in the 2011 NCAA Tournament that sent the Seminoles to the College Cup. The stretch includes two memorable 1-0 wins, in the 2014 national championship game to win the program’s first NCAA title and the 2021 ACC championship game, along with a 2-2 draw and PK triumph in the 2015 ACC championship match.
FSU has won three in a row against UVA, 1-0 in the 2021 ACC title game, 1-0 in Charlottesville in 2022 and 4-0 a year ago in Tallahassee. In last season’s home victory, then-No. 22 Florida State posted a 4-0 win over then-No. 23 Virginia. The home side took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute, and Solai Washington made it 2-0 in the 23rd when she converted a penalty. Hudson extended the lead to 3-0 with an assist from Dudley in the 34th minute, and it was 4-0 in the 76th minute courtesy of Giana Riley, as Mimi Van Zanten notched an assist. The Seminoles out-shot the Cavaliers 20-8, with a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal, as Todd made four saves for the clean sheet.

Florida State men’s head golf coach Trey Jones has been chosen to join the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame as part of the 2025 class:
Jones will head to Las Vegas to be inducted into the GCAA Hall of Fame on Dec. 9, 2025, at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino along with Mike Cook and Dale Dover.
Entering his 23rd season at FSU, Jones serves as the director of golf for FSU’s men’s and women’s golf programs. The Seminoles have played in 19 consecutive NCAA Regionals and have qualified for the NCAA Championship for the past five seasons.
A three-time ACC Coach of the Year, Jones has led the team to 41 victories, 41 All-America selections, 12 GCAA All-America Scholar selections and eight Palmer Cup alumni.
In the 2024-25 season, Jones led the Seminoles to four tournament victories, including the 2025 NCAA Tallahassee Regional. Luke Clanton won all four tournaments and secured his PGA TOUR CARD following the Valspar Invitational. Clanton was ranked No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings in August of 2024 and was awarded the 2024 Mark H. McCormack Medal.
Clanton became the second Ben Hogan Award winner in program history after John Pak and was a finalist for the Fred Haskins and Jack Nicklaus Awards. Pak also won the Jack Nicklaus Award in 2021 while becoming the sixth player in college golf history to sweep all three ‘National Player of the Year’ awards.
Tyler Weaver was the ACC runner-up and Cabo Collegiate champion during the 2024-25 season. Following the season, he qualified for the 125th U.S. Open, where he finished fourth among amateurs. Currently, Weaver is ranked 11th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and just took home bronze with Team England at the World Amateur Team Championship.
Jones led the FSU to its first NCAA runner-up finish in 2024. Jones took home ACC Co-Coach of the Year, while Weaver won ACC Freshman of the Year honors.
While at FSU, Jones has coached two athletes selected to the FSU Athletics Hall of Fame, Jonas Blixt (2005-08) and Brooks Koepka (2009-12). Blixt was a part of the 2021 class, after leading FSU to its first-ever ACC Championship in 2007 and earned First Team All-America. He joined the PGA Tour in 2012, tallied three TOUR victories and finished tied for second in his first Masters in 2014.
