We saw flashes of their immense potential on the domestic front at times last season and for many of Sunderland’s young tyros, during a marathon and frankly weird World Cup in the United States, and as the Lads continue to put in the hard yards ahead of the 2026/2027 season, there should be a growing sense of optimism about the mass of developing talent that we can currently call upon.
Although much work must be undertaken in order to streamline and refine the squad ahead of what promises to be a landmark
if immensely challenging campaign, there’s no mass rebuild needed and some of the players currently in and around the first team picture will hopefully be viewing the coming season as their time to shine; a chance to show supporters both at home and in Europe just why we rate them so highly.
Everywhere you look, the talent is there.
Chris Rigg’s opener against Aston Villa last season, for example, might’ve been in a losing cause but was an important moment as he began to get to grips with the demands of Premier League football, and his earlier performance at St James’ Park was that of a player with the growing maturity and big-game mentality to back up his incredible ability.
From an FA Cup debut to European football in four years for a local lad that rose through the ranks and has grown along with the club? That’s some story.
Furthermore, before making a hugely positive impressions across the Atlantic for Morocco, Chemsdine Talbi was looking ever more promising in a red and white shirt, and Habib Diarra — himself a sterling performer for Senegal during their own World Cup campaign — eventually recovered from injury frustrations and fluctuations in form, gradually beginning to show signs of his undoubted quality as the 2025/2026 season approached the final reckoning.
Encouraging. And important, too, because these lads represent both the ‘here and now’ as well as the future; the best of the fledgling talents Sunderland can currently boast at first team level and with the capacity to become game-changers in the seasons ahead.
Premier League football was new to them last time around, yet they’ll encounter no such mysteries in 2026/2027 and as such, should be capable of even greater things, particularly with the exciting opportunities that’ll arise in European competition.
Of course, there doesn’t seem to be any undue pressure being placed on their slender shoulders and there’s no overwhelming sense of urgency regarding their evolution — neither from the fans nor the Sunderland coaches — and that’s how it should be.
In many cases, the media hype that often surrounds footballers of this age has a detrimental impact, knocking their confidence, stunting their growth and throwing them off course if and when things don’t go as planned.
There’s arguably never been another era during which the demands and expectations placed upon on young players have been greater (as well as the criticism for so-called poor performances being harsher), but I don’t believe in the theory that if they don’t “make it” at a certain level by a certain age, they’re destined never to do so — Didier Drogba, anyone?
Certainly, Sunderland seem to be ruthlessly focused on ensuring that this crop of emerging talents is given the space and breathing room to develop, to find their place, and yes, to occasionally make mistakes.
This ethos, which was somewhat unfamiliar at the time, was first put into place and gradually implemented at all levels by Kristjaan Speakman.
Beginning in 2022/2023, its importance was reiterated on numerous occasions by Tony Mowbray, and the new ‘Sunderland way’ is undoubtedly being built upon and adhered to by Régis Le Bris, himself familiar with the trials and tribulations of youth development from his time in France.
Learning their trade in an environment that rewards talent, hard work and application and under a head coach that demands certain levels are reached yet shows ample faith in those that earn it, I like what I’ve seen from players such as Rigg, Talbi and Diarra and I couldn’t believe any more strongly in their potential.
They understand what’s being asked of them and the supporters — as we saw with the regular displays of affection for the players mentioned last season — are aware of it too.
Development in the top flight is seldom linear; setbacks are par for the course and it’s the resilient players that can absorb the knocks and emerge stronger that often go the furthest in the game. That in itself is most definitely something to aspire to, and why not?
The three players I’ve highlighted here, as well as rawer prospects such as Nilson Angulo and Jocelin Ta Bi, will more than likely be key figures at various stages for Sunderland next season.
Away trips in the Europa League will broaden their horizons and build their character, and the challenge of the Premier League will continue to test them, but if 2025/2026 was anything to go by, it’s hard to escape the sense that there’s so much more to come, and that should excite us all.
