Newcastle United’s pursuit of Wolves forward Jorgen Strand Larsen appears to be over, despite the club’s long-standing interest in the Wolves forward.
Answering fan questions during a Q&A on Tuesday, The Athletic’s Chris Waugh explained that Newcastle held talks with the striker’s representatives across a six-week period during the summer, ultimately submitting two bids worth £50 million ($67.9m) and £55m, both of them rejected.
Although Strand Larsen was a serious option at a point in the summer,
the chances of a future move to St James’ Park are effectively over following Yoane Wissa’s arrival for £55m alongside Nick Woltemade’s club-record transfer.
Newcastle, according to Waugh, now see no appeal in reigniting the chase in January, unless they are hit by significant injuries to both of their new strikers.
Waugh reported that the expectation is that even if teenager William Osula leaves in the winter window, whether that’s by getting sold or loaned out, the Magpies would target a younger forward rather than revisiting Strand Larsen, who turns 26 in February.
In the end, Waugh reported, Newcastle’s choice came down to Wissa or Strand Larsen, and with the former secured because of his proven track record in the Premier League.
