Dayot Upamecano has been a rock at the back for Bayern Munich, but against SC Freiburg, the Frenchman showed he could be just as dangerous going forward.
Upamecano opened the scoring in Bayern’s 3-1 victory with an outstanding solo effort, driving forward from defense before finishing clinically after a perfectly weighted pass from Michael Olise. It was a brilliant moment from the center-back, and interim head coach Aaron Danks revealed that the goal was not entirely spontaneous.
Bayern Munich had
already identified a similar opportunity from the Champions League draw against Arsenal and used it to help Upamecano recognize the situation when it appeared again.
Danks explained the preparation behind the goal.
“We showed him the chance that he had against Arsenal the other day, where he made a similar run. I thought he finished it really well. It was fantastic, really good for him,” said Danks (as captured by @iMiaSanMia)
The finish demonstrated the value of Bayern Munich’s attention to detail, with the coaching staff turning a previous opportunity into a learning moment that paid off against SC Freiburg.
Upamecano has already established himself as one of Bayern Munich’s most important defensive players, but his willingness to carry the ball forward adds another dimension to his game. When opponents give him space to advance, he can become an unexpected attacking weapon.
Against SC Freiburg, that quality helped Bayern establish control early and set the tone for an eventual 3-1 victory. Not bad for a center-back who had already been busy doing his actual job.
