The offensive gameplan for the No. 7 Texas Longhorns against the UTEP Miners on Saturday at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium took a major blow on the first play from scrimmage as redshirt sophomore running back CJ Baxter limped off the field, received attention in the medical tent, headed to the locker room, and did not return.
In the post-game press conference, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said that Baxter suffered a hamstring injury on his six-yard run.
“I don’t know the exact severity
but enough to shut him down,” Sarkisian said.
Texas was also without junior running back Quintrevion Wisner on Saturday after he missed a second straight game due to injury.
With Baxter and Wisner out, the leading rusher was freshman James Simon in a solid debut, carrying the ball 17 times for 67 yards, sophomore Jerrick Gibson added 18 carries for 64 yards, and redshirt freshman Christian Clark recorded 64 yards from scrimmage on nine touches.
