Barcelona have raised eyebrows this week by agreeing a deal for Anthony Gordon and with reports flying about that the club are about to offer Atletico Madrid €100 million for Julian Alvarez.
There’s also speculation in the media that Barcelona could go for Bernardo Silva and still want to boost their defence before the new campaign.
The transfer activity has taken many by surprise, given the precarious nature of Barca’s finances, but RAC1 have attempted to explain why Barca are going big this summer.
One big reason is the return to the 1:1 rule and also the fair play freed up by Robert Lewandowski’s departure.
The club believe the striker’s departure allows them space to sign Alvarez and RAC1 says Barca have up to €120 million to spend on the Argentina, although they don’t really want to go over €100m.
Gordon, meanwhile, will take the place of Marcus Rashford. The club don’t expect the Manchester United loanee to stay unless they fail to sign a striker this summer.
The Newcastle winger is seen as “more intense defensively” and occupies less financial fair play due to his lower salary and the way the transfer is amortized.
Barcelona are also said to be going big now because they “know they now that next summer they will most likely be outside the 1:1 rule again.”
The club will have to return to Montjuic at some point next season while the roof is installed at Camp Nou. The switch in stadium will bring with it a huge drop in income, meaning Barca are “spending for two summers” this year.
