FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.— The Iowa State women’s distance medley relay team shattered the school record in the event at the Arkansas qualifier meet last weekend at the University of Arkansas. The team of Makayla Clark, Rachel Joseph, Emma Vorpagel, and Betty Kipkore ran to a new school record of 10:44.11, finishing third in the elite field behind Oklahoma State and Arkansas. The time currently ranked fourth in the nation and sixth in collegiate history. The run sets the relay team in prime position to qualify
for the NCAA Championships as the top 12 advance following conference championships. If they can qualify, it would be the first time in the NCAA era after winning the DMR national title in 1981 while women competed under the AIAW.
On the men’s side, the distance medley relay team of Emanuel Galdino, Gus Langford, Jailan Sohna, and Robin Kwemoi Bera placed third in a time of 9:26.13. That time is the fourth fastest in Iowa State history.
At the Iowa open, Daylin Willimas broke the 60-meter hurdle school record with a time of 7.72 to take second place in the finals of the event. Alec Carr took second with an all-time best time of 7.77 to move into third place in Iowa State history.
On the women’s side, Emma Havighurst had the fastest 60-meter hurdle time in the prelims with a 8.31 time. She placed fourth in the finals in 8.27. Teammates Riyah Burns was the second place finisher in 8.36 and Maia Denge-Hagen was seventh in 8.63. Denge-Hagen was fifth in the 200-meter dash in 25.27. Brooklyn Sandvig was the runner up in the 400-meter dash in 56.71 with fellow teammate Cameron Moon fourth in 57.61. Ava Cinnamo added a runner-up finish in the triple jump with a jump of 12.32M/40-05.0.
