The Washington Mystics have the youngest team in the WNBA. And they have now moved above .500 by defeating two championship contenders in back-to-back games. On Friday, they defeated the New York Liberty 86-83. And now, they defeated the Minnesota Lynx, the team currently leading in the standings, 84-79. Better yet, the Mystics are now above .500 with an 8-7 record.
Tonight’s game featured 11 lead changes, seven ties and neither team led by more than than 10 points. Not surprisingly, it was the Lynx.
Minnesota also headed into halftime with a 42-35 lead.
But in the fourth quarter, Washington stabilized and dominated in the fourth quarter, holding Minnesota to just 31.2 percent shooting and outscored them 28-19. Along the way, they chipped away at the lead with plays like these below. Take a look at Cotie McMahon showing her marksmanship when the Mystics needed her most.
The Lynx were still leading with just seconds left. But Kiki Iriafen took care of business with this shot which gave the Mystics the lead for good.
Iriafen scored 17 points for Washington with Sonia Citron leading the team in scoring with 21 points. McMahon scored 15 off the bench. For the Lynx, Olivia Miles led with 22 points.
The Mystics are above .500 again and now have multiple signature wins in the past week. Their next game is on Wednesday when they … HOST … the Lynx. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m. ET. Hopefully the Mystics can give AJ Dybantsa (… or whoever the Washington Wizards draft on Tuesday) a warm welcome with a win.
