Barcelona manager Hansi Flick had some beautiful words for Gavi after the news that the midfielder is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after undergoing knee surgery on Tuesday.
Speaking at a press
conference on Wednesday, Flick revealed he was the first person to call Gavi on Wednesday morning and is confident that the 21-year-old will return to his best due to his heart, mentality, and passion for the club.
“I don’t think it’s easy for a young player to come to terms with this news, but he’ll see it like we did. I woke him up this morning. He was surprised I called him so soon. He has a good mentality. He has quality, and we’ll help him get back. His heart, attitude, and mentality are top-notch… with this second injury, you have to be very disciplined, recover… do the training… we’ll help him. But he knows it’s not easy, although if anyone can do it, it’s him.”
“When we were told the news, it was bad news. But for him, it’s good news because now we can take care of him and take things step by step. He’s only 21 and has a long way to go. We can’t think in the short term. He has to work hard, be a professional footballer… we have to show him that. He has a huge heart, a lot of emotion, he lives for this club… I’m happy to have him and he brings a lot to us, but we’ll support him to reach his level again.”
Gavi underwent arthroscopic surgery to address damage to his meniscus and will miss the next 4-5 months of action for the Blaugrana. It’s certainly a huge setback, but as Flick said, if anyone can overcome it it’s Gavi.
