What is the story about?

Veteran left-hander Cole Irvin has been a stabilizing force in the Triple-A Oklahoma City Comets rotation this year, and on Monday he was named pitcher of the week in the Pacific Coast League.

Irvin started twice for Oklahoma City last week against Sugar Land and didn’t allow a run in either game, totaling 9 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts and five walks. He also made this nifty stab of a line drive for a double play on Sunday.

The 32-year-old Irvin pitched twice previously on four days rest this season, going four innings each time, and allowed nine total runs. On Sunday he pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings, after throwing five scoreless innings on Tuesday.

On the season, Irvin leads the Pacific Coast League in innings pitched (134), ERA (3.09), and wins (12).

Six Oklahoma City Comets have won Pacific Coast League player or pitcher of the week this season — James Tibbs (March 31—April 5 and May 25-31), Alex Freeland (May 11-17), Jack Suwinski (June 9-14), Ryder Ryan (June 9-14), Emmet Sheehan (August 17-23), and Irvin.
