In the lead up to the Week 8 matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns, Jared Verse did a lot of talking.
The Browns’ edge rusher said that some Steelers players were “dirty,” and called out Cam Heyward after the Steelers’ captain responded to those comments.
“I’m not worried about Cam,” Verse said. “I’m not worried about their offensive line. I’m not worried about anyone on their team.”
And, to be fair, Verse shouldn’t worry about the Steelers. He should, however, worry about not
having a sack through eight games. He should worry that Steelers undrafted rookie Kevin Jobity now has more sacks than him, despite Sunday being just the second game he’s appeared in. He should worry that his tackle total was lower than his body slams received total. And he should worry that the Steelers ran it to the tune of 200 yards against his defense.
Steelers running back Jaylen Warren heard what was said all week, and brushed off Verse’s comments when asked about them after the game.
“Some walk, some talk,” Warren said.
Safety Jaquan Brisker was a bit more blunt.
“He should have kept his mouth shut,” Brisker said via Ashley Wenskowski. All that talk, and then to come out with 0 tackles, that’s bad. He’s gotta look at himself in the mirror and get better.”
Offensive tackle Troy Fautanu added that the Steelers purposely weren’t saying anything once they took a big lead.
“We were kinda not talking on purpose just to piss them off,” Fautanu said via Alan Saunders. “They wanted us to start chatting a little bit. We were just trying to finish the game.”
Edge rusher Nick Herbig echoed this sentiment.
“We let the pads do the talking,” Herbig said.
The Steelers made it clear throughout the week that they had no interest in engaging in Verse’s battle of words. They were more concerned about winning the war on the field. Now at 6-2, the Steelers control their destiny. Take care of business in the second half of the season, and the AFC North will be theirs for a second straight season.
