After finishing off Bayern Munich’s domestic double season with a total of 61 goals and 7 assists from 51 appearances across all competitions, Harry Kane got his World Cup with England off to a flying start with his 2 goals in their 4-2 win over Croatia in Arlington, Texas. A calmly (retaken) penalty kick and a brilliantly placed header from a corner kick in the first half of the win saw the Three Lions’ skipper score a brace incredibly characteristic of what Bayern and England fans have come to expect
from the player that Rio Ferdinand recently said was the only World Class player in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
With his pair of goals in the win over Croatia, Kane’s tally of World Cup goals went from 8 to 10, dating back to Russia 2018, when Kane was first in an England shirt at a World Cup. Despite getting knocked out in the semfinals by Croatia in Russia, Kane took home the tournament’s Golden Boot back then, which is something he’ll certainly be gunning for this summer, too. Nonetheless, Kane was over the moon to have reached the milestone of 10 World Cup goals as he got his nation off to a winning start in what was, on paper, their most difficult match of their group with absolutely no disrespect meant towards Ghana or Panama.
“Obviously it’s a great milestone to reach, to get 10 goals in a World Cup. To reach double figures in this amazing tournament is very special. And it’s the first game, I’m feeling good,” the striker said after full time against Croatia in Arlington (via @iMiaSanMia).
“I said before the game, physically, mentally, the goals I’ve scored this year (are) at the highest level I’ve ever had in my career. I enjoy being on the pitch when I’m feeling in this form,” Kane continued.
He’s showing absolutely no signs of slowing down anytime soon and the fact that he was in his own box making blocks late on in the match against Croatia with England 4-2 just typifies the work he’s been able to do on both sides of the ball. For both Bayern and England, he’s been dropping deep to get on the ball and play long diagonals and doing defensive work just as much as he remains a persistent threat in attack and in front of goal.
Several players have also already scored at least twice at the World Cup, so Kane could face some stiff competition for the Golden Boot, but it’d be difficult to bet against him getting on the scoresheet against both Ghana and Panama, assuming he plays at least 45 minutes in both matches.
