Despite a “positive first talk” between Marc Cucurella and new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, the former didn’t feel like staying in Stamford Bridge in a season where the Blues failed to fetch a spot in an European competition. The Spanish left-back joins Real Madrid, Alonso’s former club, in their first landmark signing post-re-signing José Mourinho.
Cucurella joins Real Madrid on a six-year contract. We did get a fair amount out of this deal, with
Los Blancos reportedly paying €55m upfront with €5m in add-ons.
One of Chelsea’s marquee signings in the first year of BlueCo ownership from Brighton, he didn’t live up to expectations on his debut season. As time went on he cemented himself as one of the best players in his position, with several individual performances that helped bring the (thus far) two trophies won since the club’s sale.
Best of luck in Madrid, Marc! We’ll miss you.
