Today could be the last time we ever see Max Scherzer pitch in a major league uniform. He’s taking the ball tonight for the Blue Jays as they try to even up their series against the Mariners and guarantee
at least one more baseball game in Toronto this October.
For a while, it looked like the last time we’d ever see Scherzer pitch again was the game against the Red Sox back on September 24th when he got lit up for ten hits in just five innings of work. Toronto hated that outing so much they left him off the ALDS roster against the Yankees, and are only turning to him now as their pitching runs thin.
It’s a classic “does the old king of the jungle still have one more fight left in him?” script, and I’m eager to see how it plays out with it coming at a crucial swing point in this ALCS. Scherzer’s been a part of so many big postseason moments over the years, so it only seems appropriate he gets one more test here at the end of the line.
Speaking of things coming to an end, today and tomorrow could be the final two days where we have more than one baseball game on the docket until spring. There’s a chance we still get one more of these on Monday if the ALCS goes seven games and the NLCS goes at least six, but enjoy these two evenings if you love baseball because you may not have another for five months.
