I guess Marquette wasn’t really bothered by having two weeks off between games.
On Saturday, Marquette women’s lacrosse wrapped up their home portion of the Big East schedule with a 20-6 win over Butler. Sure, it’s Butler, which is now 3-12 on the year and 0-5 in the Big East. Odds are Marquette was going to win anyway, but there was very little doubt as to what was going to happen here.
It was 4-0 Marquette before the clock hit the midway mark of the first quarter, and the Golden Eagles had scored
on their first, fourth, five, and sixth shots of the game. The fourth goal was probably the mean one, as Tess Osburn tallied just 18 seconds after Eileen Dooley had made it 3-0.
Between the pass from Dani Serrano and the spin move, yeah, pretty mean.
Butler scored the next two goals of the game, and for a moment here, you could almost start to see BU having a chance. 4-2, six minutes left in the first quarter, Bulldogs scored on their second and third shots, both of them free position attempts, if MU keeps doing them favors with fouls…. hmmmmm…. but Hanna Bodner and Tess Osburn scored before 90 seconds went by, 6-2 Marquette.
It was 6-3 at the start of the second quarter, and Ella Mautz’s goal at the 10:38 mark was the start of the end for Butler. As it turns out, the Mautz goal was technically the game winner, since it was MU’s seventh goal of the game. It was also the first of six unanswered in the second quarter, and with Osburn’s goal to start the scoring in the third period, the first of seven straight for Marquette. 12-3 at halftime, 13-3 and the running clock rolling along just 50 seconds into the second half.
Butler got a couple of goals to turn the running clock off, but that was just prolonging the inevitable. Osburn’s fifth and final goal of the day got the clock running again at 15-5, and goals by Bodner and Julia Evens kept it there.
Tess Osburn’s five goals led Marquette in that department, and Hanna Bodner was the only other Golden Eagle with a hat trick, which kinda means that they spread 20 goals out pretty well. However, both women do not get high point honors for the day, as that goes to Dani Serrano. The freshman finished with two goals and a whopping seven assists, giving her nine points. That’s more than Butler had as a team!! It is, however, only tied for the fourth best game in Marquette history, as there have been three double digit outings in the past.
Jillian Howell gets the win after departing at halftime, although she only made two saves while allowing three goals. Then again, Butler only took eight shots in the first half, and two of the goals allowed were on free position attempts anyway. Mikayla Yang played all of the third quarter and about half of the fourth, allowing three goals on five shots on frame, and Zoey Gottlieb got in for the final eight minutes and handed Butler one last stop.
Up Next: One last regular season contest, and I think it still matters for the Big East tournament. At 3-2 in the league, the Golden Eagles control their own destiny as they head to visit UConn. First draw against the 2-3 Huskies on Saturday, April 25, is set for 10:30am Central time. A Marquette loss combined with a Villanova win over Butler next week would move MU, VU, and UConn into a three-way tie at 3-3, and with everyone going 1-1 against the other two (I misspoke in the preview, sorry), it’s hard to say who would come out ahead of the tiebreaker with everyone also going 0-2 against Denver and Georgetown and 2-0 against Xavier and Butler. So, y’know, just beat UConn, just to be safe.
