The Friedkin Group’s (in)activity over the summer transfer window and general (dis)interest in the running of Everton Football Club tipped the fanbase off that they were planning to make an exit from the club’s ownership. That combined with their increased focus and spending at their other club AS Roma pretty much told us everything we needed to know.
However, when David Ornstein of The Athletic broke the news this morning that the club was up for sale yet again in less than two years since the Friedkins
bought a controlling stake in the club in December 2024, many of the supporters were caught by surprise by how quickly the demise had happened.
Earlier this season, and granted it’s only still October, news had filtered through that the Friedkins were courting investors in the club as they looked to divest their ownership in Everton. That thinking appears to have now changed with their investment vehicle Roundhouse Capital looking to sell their majority stake as well.
Soon after, the club released a statement explaining the move.
The Friedkin Group is exploring new investment options for Everton Football Club, including the potential sale of a controlling interest.
When TFG became custodians of Everton, the Club faced significant financial uncertainty and challenges both on and off the pitch. The immediate priority was to provide the stability, investment and support needed to secure the Club’s future, including helping to bring the long-promised stadium to completion for its deserving supporters.
With that foundation now safely in place, the time is right to consider the next chapter for Everton. We will only entertain interest from parties who we strongly believe will be the right stewards to take the Club forward and build on the momentum that has been established.
Throughout this process, TFG’s focus will remain unchanged. We will support the Club in all ways necessary to achieve success on the pitch and will continue efforts to make a positive difference in the communities the Club serves.
TFG and the Club will not be commenting further while this work is under way.
Moelis & Company has been retained by TFG.
So here we are plunged again into off-the-pitch turmoil just when we had gotten the financial picture stabilized, having completed a full season at their new home at the Hill Dickinson Stadium with club income at an all-time high.
More to come on this.
