We don’t normally post about LSU hiring non-on the field assistant coaches, but yesterday the program got some news that likely made you go “oh!”
Former LSU offensive line coach James Cregg has been hired by LSU in some type of role that has yet to be announced. It’s likely that Cregg is coming to be an analyst seeing as Eric Wolford has been hired as the Tiger offensive line coach.
Cregg and Lane Kiffin have been tied at the hip for quite a while. Cregg worked for Kiffin back when Kiffin was the head
coach for the Oakland Raiders, and then Cregg followed Kiffin to Tennessee, USC, and Ole Miss. Cregg is currently an analyst for the Rebels and will join LSU once Ole Miss’ season comes to an end. Cregg also has NFL experience outside of working with Kiffin, coaching in Denver, Los Angeles San Francisco, and was the offensive line coach for the Raiders in 2024.
Cregg is no stranger to Baton Rouge. He was on Ed Orgeron’s staff from 2017 through 2021 and was the offensive line coach for the 2019 national championship team; that season the Tigers also won the Joe Moore Award, which is given annually to the best offensive line in the country.
To say Cregg’s exit from LSU was messy is putting it mildly. Cregg was fired for cause in 2020 for recruiting violations, but Cregg won a wrongful termination lawsuit against LSU and the university was ordered to pay Cregg $500,000.
Wolford and Cregg will have their hands full trying to rebuild the Tiger offensive line. The unit was by far and away the weakest group for the Tigers in 2025 and LSU has seen six offensive linemen put their names into the transfer portal.
