The Golden State Valkyries know who they are.
The pillars of their identity—defense and depth, plus the the clutchtime magic of Ballhalla—were the foundation of their Game 1 win in the 2026 WNBA Finals over the Atlanta Dream.
Through their 5-0 start to the postseason, the Dream had appeared to discover their identity, flexing an aggression and athleticism that overwhelmed the Washington Mystics and New York Liberty.
But, what if they can’t access that very best version of themselves?
If the defensive
aggression does not lead to a torrent of turnovers that produces tons of transition offense, then what happens? If the opponent can match their athleticism, neutralizing advantages earned through speed, length and energy, what’s the alternative?
Those are the questions facing the Dream as they prepare for Game 2 of the WNBA Finals.
Can Atlanta reassert who they are against a Golden State team that seems perfectly suited to snuff out the Dream’s strengths, evidenced by the Valkyries’ now 4-0 record against the Dream across the 2026 regular season and playoffs? Alternatively, can the Dream find an expanded version of themselves, solving the problems the Valkyries have presented through tweaked tactics and shifted strategies?
After Game 1, the Dream expressed an intent to rediscover their identity.
Speaking to Atlanta News First’s Baillie Burmaster, Rhyne Howard asserted that the Dream “didn’t punch back” and instead “played to how they were making us play,” noting that Atlanta must “play like we’ve been playing the regular postseason” and not “let them dictate how we want to play.”
In the postgame press conference, Angel Reese was similarly insistent, suggesting her scoreless second half was not the product of defensive adjustments from Golden State but about her own lack of necessary aggression.
There’s reason to believe that the Dream are right.
Heading into Game 1, they not only were undefeated in the playoffs but also had won a franchise-record 10-straight games. Such a streak of success suggests that one loss should not inspire significant change.
As head coach Karl Smesko said, “We were right there. Right there. That’s why it hurts a little bit, but it also motivates us.”
Game 1 also offered more than enough encouraging evidence.
To quote Smesko, the Dream were “right there” even, as indicated by the final score, the game was played on the Valkyries’ terms and at their tempo. Ideally, Atlanta would prefer to determine the game’s flow and feel. A faster, somewhat chaotic and up-and-down affair would be more favorable.
Yet, in a matchup that trended slower and muddier, the Dream led for almost 80 percent of the game. They did not pile up transition points. Nor did they feast on early offensive opportunities. And they barely hit anything from behind the arc.
But, they still had the edge for most of the afternoon. That made the loss more painful, but also justifies some positivity.
Howard managed to score just 12 points on 14 shots. Reese was silenced after a fantastic first quarter. Jordin Canada’s new-found scoring juice wasn’t there. Back on the bench with Allisha Gray’s return, DeWanna Bonner did not provide a productive injection of veteran experience. Gray herself, with a new-and-improved left hand, looked like the difference maker in the early going, but, after not playing a full game since the first round, lost steam as the game progressed. She still finished as the Dream’s leading scorer, with 19 points on 19 shot attempts.
It’s easy to argue that Atlanta didn’t play well—and, again, almost stole Game 1.
They didn’t. And the crux is the clutch.
The solidity of Golden State’s identity compared to the shakiness of Atlanta’s was most evident in the fourth quarter. As the final 10 minutes ticked by, the Valkyries, led by Gabby Williams, became more assured and empowered; the Dream experienced an unraveling into indecision and self-inflicted errors.
Howard is the easily identifiable culprit.
A player who is often more comfortable taking what the defense gives her, Howard attempted to assume the first-option mantle for the Dream down the stretch. Yet, induced into isolation actions by the Golden State defense, Howard’s assertiveness devolved into over dribbling, poor passes and forced drives, unable to to coerce a reaction and rotation from the Valkyrie defense that could, in turn, open up an easy look for herself or a teammate.
During the semifinals, Canada was the end-of-game engine for the Dream, with her speed advantage making her a near-automatic paint touch. From there, Canada could zoom to the rim for acrobatic finishes or kick the ball out to a teammate who was ready to take the open shot, or move the ball until such a shot materialized. Golden State, however, was prepared to close off Canada’s attacks, or any other penetration of the paint from Atlanta players.
Unless the 3-pointers start falling, does Atlanta have a solution to the halfcourt stagnancy?
Until this playoff run, the Dream rarely had demonstrated poise and precision in the offensive halfcourt. There’s a reason the team has leaned into their defense. They’re a group of elite defenders who are good enough on offense.
Howard profiles as a player capable of superstar efforts in the stretch. Yet, she too often settles for contested shots. When she does break the paint, she tends to fade away on midrange attempts or try for a flailing, off-balance finish at the rim, too concerned with evading, rather than embracing, contact. Gray’s game, while effective, lacks on-the-ball diversity; she going to take the 3 or drive. Reese’s halfcourt game is still refining, with her outside shot too inconsistent and drives to the hoop too uncomposed to be a trusted option in late-game situations. Second-chance points, instead, are her greatest value in such circumstances, something Golden State has recognized with the extra attention they are directing towards her when she’s battling on the glass. Canada, as she showed in the semis, might be best suited for the role, except her size becomes an issue against a superior defense.
Maybe it’s Dream dooming, but the best solution might be avoiding a close game. However, it’s hard to imagine Atlanta escaping in anything resembling blowout fashion, especially in the halls of Ballhalla. This season, the Valkyries lost just five home games, with their worst defeat coming by 11 points.
In a seven-game series, Game 2 is not a must-win game for the Dream.
Except, it kind of is. In the event of another loss, the Dream can take solace in the series shift to Atlanta, where they will have two home games at State Farm Arena to even the series at 2-2, but falling down 0-2 still requires winning four of the next five—and one of those wins would have to come in Ballhalla.
It’s Atlanta’s best interest to make it Game 2. Whether they reassert their identity, make the necessary adjustments or establish some perfect combination of those approaches, can they get the job done?
Dream fans, are you down on the team after how Game 1 ended? (I, obviously, am.) Do you think they will be steeled or shaken in Game 2? Who needs to raise her play and rise to the occasion the most if Atlanta is to prevail?
And Valks fans, are you confident that Gabby and the gang can do it again?
