With the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup coming up, Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany was asked if he had been in contact with the new DFB manager. With Jürgen Klopp now in charge, some pundits have speculated that FC Bayern will no longer enjoy the special position it always had within the German national team hierarchy.
Kompany, for his part, was tactfully silent on the issue. “I don’t want to reveal that,” he said, when asked if there had been contact (via @iMiaSanMia).
“I’ve known Jürgen Klopp for
a long time from England and I am looking forward to working together. We have worked against each other in fierce competition for many years. We will have an open exchange at some point.”
An “open” exchange meaning one that the media actually gets to report on? Does that imply a closed exchange has already taken place? When it comes to the German national team, Klopp or no, no individual club team holds more sway than Bayern Munich. As the coach of the biggest club in the country, and the man in charge of key players’ well-being and development, Klopp has plenty to gain by building a rapport with Kompany.
We’ll probably know more by next month’s international break.
