The Philadelphia Eagles will NOT be trading Saquon Barkley ahead of the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday, November 10, according to reporting from ESPN.
Still, Howie Roseman and the Eagles believe they still have plenty of talent on the roster to compete in 2027 and beyond. That’s why, according to sources, they’ve made it clear to teams they’re not considering trading Barkley.
It’s a bit ironic that there’s talk about the Eagles’ long-term vision for Barkley on the same day that they’re counting on him
to play through significant injury in a risky attempt to salvage a sinking 2026 season.
Some more thoughts to unpack from this report:
- I think everyone can agree the Eagles shouldn’t be interested in unloading Barkley regardless of the price. This isn’t the same situation that some of their others players are in as impending free agents (see: Moro Ojomo, Riq Woolen). You’re only trading Barkley if the price is too good to refuse, such as it was in the Cam Jurgens trade. Not just because you decided you’re sellers so you’ll take whatever you can get.
- It seems like Roseman has already gauged the market and sensed there isn’t a no-brainer offer to be had for Barkley, hence this reporting come to light. Perhaps the intent of this report is to set reasonable expectations for the public. But perhaps it’s also a message that teams interested in Barkley must significantly increase their offers if they want him.
- Barring a no-trade clause, most players don’t have a say in whether they’re traded or not. There’s a case to be made that Barkley deserves more of a voice in these conversations than the average player due to his championship contributions to this franchise. Again, it’s not like you’re turning down a no-brainer haul because of his preferences. But it would be bad form to trade him somewhere against his will, especially if the price isn’t even all that great.
The feeling here is that the Eagles could eventually regret not moving Barkley — who turns 30 in February — if they’re passing on some really strong offers. But we don’t know if those are even on the table for him, especially while he’s hampered by injury. It’ll be worth be paying attention to what the Indianapolis Colts can fetch in return for Jonathan Taylor as a potential comparison.
