The Atlanta Hawks have hired former Portland Trail Blazers assistant general manager Sergi Oliva as a basketball strategy and development advisor, HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto reported Wednesday.
Following a four-year tenure with the Trail Blazers that began in May 2022, Oliva left the franchise this offseason, shortly after fellow Blazers assistant GM Mike Schmitz departed to become the general manager of the Dallas Mavericks. In addition to his role as assistant GM, Oliva also served as the head coach
of the Blazers’ G League affiliate Rip City Remix for the 2024-25 season.
The Blazers haven’t announced replacements for Schmitz or Oliva’s roles with the franchise, leaving Andrae Patterson as the lone assistant GM remaining under Blazers GM Joe Cronin.
Oliva got his NBA start with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2014 as a basketball operations analyst. He spent six seasons with the franchise, finishing his tenure as vice president of strategy. Before joining the Blazers, Oliva spent two seasons as an assistant with the Utah Jazz under head coach Quin Snyder, who he will now be reuniting with in Atlanta. Snyder has served as the head coach of the Hawks since February 2023.
