The free agency dust is finally starting to settle in Sixers land after a blockbuster trade for Jaylen Brown and the signing of LeBron James. Thus far, the Sixers have signaled they’re heading into the season with their current group at 14 roster spots. Now, we’re getting an idea of what’s to come, with ESPN’s Dave McMenamin and other insiders reporting on the league’s top remaining free agents.
Per McMenamin, the Sixers “have been in contact” with Love’s agent, Jeff Schwartz, since signing James.
He also shared that Love has interest in pairing with James, but has also maintained a strong relationship with Utah Jazz coach Will Hardy, with whom he played last season. As things stand currently, the Jazz roster is full.
The Sixers could bring Love aboard, albeit at a later date. They lack the cap space below the first apron to fill their 15th and final roster spot as currently constructed. However, they can sign Love to a prorated contract in mid-December without any roster turnover if they choose.
This isn’t the first time Love has had interest in joining the Sixers. In February of 2023, the Sixers were among the final two teams he decided between fresh off a buyout with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Love would go on to sign with the Miami Heat. He spent two and a half years there before being traded to Utah in 2025 in a multi-team deal that brought Norman Powell to Miami. Love spent all of last season with the rebuilding Utah Jazz, averaging 6.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists on 39.7 percent shooting and 37.3 percent from three in 16.6 minutes across 37 games. He started five games.
At age 37, Love’s best years are certainly behind him. However, you could argue that the Sixers could do worse with their final roster spot. Love can still shoot the three and is an effective rebounder (his per-36 rate was 12.6 rebounds per game). With the backup center spot occupied by Adem Bona and Ariel Hukporti, he’d bring a different skillset to the mix if the Sixers wanted floor spacing over rim protection and athleticism. By all accounts, he’s also a good presence in the locker room, beyond his relationship with James.
For now, it appears unlikely Love will join the Sixers due to roster and salary cap implications. However, there’s a chance we could see this move come to fruition mid-season as a straight-up signing or if the Sixers make another transaction within the next few months if Love remains unsigned.
