The 49ers will be breathing a sigh of relief after getting good news regarding the injury to wide receiver Mike Evans.
Evans left the 49ers’ Week 3 win over the Arizona Cardinals with two minutes left in the half following a collision with Budda Baker.
The future Hall of Famer was clearly in considerable pain and had to be carted to the locker room.
NFL Network and ESPN’s Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday that Evans was dealing with a rib strain.
He followed up on Monday with a very encouraging update,
revealing that, following an evaluation, Evans is considered day-to-day.
A rib strain refers to a strain of the intercostal muscles between the ribs. Though it is clearly a painful injury, it is a huge positive for the 49ers that Evans is dealing with a relatively minor issue.
While there is still a chance Evans could miss Sunday’s game with the Denver Broncos, Evans being day-to-day rather than week-to-week is a significant win ahead of a testing period for the 49ers in which they will face the Seattle Seahawks’ vaunted defense on the road following the visit of Denver’s fearsome group.
Evans has made an impressive start to his 49er career. Though he left the win over Arizona earlier, he still made a huge impact, successfully linking up with Deebo Samuel on a hook-and-ladder play that went for an 80-yard score and then showing tremendous late hands to haul in a pinpoint throw from Brock Purdy for a 23-yard touchdown reception.
With two touchdown grabs in three games, Evans has already established an excellent rapport with Purdy. Despite the painful nature of his injury, Evans’ connection with his quarterback won’t be interrupted for very long.
