Wolverhampton 2 – 1 Liverpool
Wolves: Gomes 78’, Andre 90+4
Reds: Salah 83’
Pre-Match
It’s mostly the same side that started against Wet Hams, other than Frimpong coming in for Joe Gomez.
First Half
Liverpool start brightly and probably should’ve been awarded a penalty after Salah was brought down in the area. But VAR didn’t bother to review it. So. You know. Business as usual.
It was expected, but still a very touching moment when both sets of fans stood up to clap for Jota, with Liverpool fans chiming in with his song a moment later.
With half an hour
gone, Liverpool look the more dangerous side, but haven’t produced much in the way of “chances.” Indeed they have just two shots for a total of 0.06 xG. But the Wolves haven’t had a single shot, so I guess that’s something.
Liverpool have picked up the pace in the closing minutes of the half, but still haven’t created much of note. And the half ends 0-0. The Reds will have to do much better at carving out some better chances in the second half if they want to get all three points tonight.
Second Half
Jones comes on for Gravenberch at the half. The Dutch international picked up a yellow in the first half, and looked like he really wanted to pick up a second, so probably the right call from the gaffer.
This half also starts with a penalty shout: this time a Wolves defender fully swung his elbow at a cross, sending it out for a corner. VAR reviewed it for approximately 0.05 seconds before deciding that handballs were fine, probably.
A moment later our favorite (?) slumlord managed to take a goal off Curtis Jones during a goalline scramble. Incredible work. It appeared that literally any touch would send that goalward, but I guess not!
After an hour, Rio and Robbo come on for Gakpo and Kerkez. Let’s fucking gooooo. And a few minutes later, Gomez comes on for Frimpong.
Good news, bad news. The good news is that Liverpool held Wolves to zero shots for the first 77 minutes of the match. The bad (and predictable) news is that Wolves scored with their first effort.
Salah scores the equalizer! Mo latches on to a poor back pass, charges into the box and slots with the outside of his left boot!
Aaaand Wolves go ahead again with a wicked deflection.
Final Thoughts
Football was a mistake.
Liverpool might’ve not deserved a win, but they definitely didn’t deserve to get beat tonight. Brutal result.
