Even with its disappointing 2-1 loss to FC Augsburg on Saturday, Bayern Munich is still eight points ahead of second place Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.
While not an insurmountable lead, it will be tough for the Black and Yellows to catch the Bavarians barring an epic slide by the German Rekordmeister.
Even with that, Borussia Dortmund is not just going to give up.
“I don’t want the title to be decided in March. I want to stay in the race as long as possible. If we cut the gap to four or five
points at some point, they’ll start to reconsider. They’ll still come to us. They’re not completely out of sight, we want to be there when they make mistakes,” BVB center-back Nico Schlotterbeck told Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Emre Can echoed his teammate’s sentiment.
“Eight points is a lot, Bayern are having an outstanding season, but so are we. We’re focusing on ourselves and we’ll see what happens in the end,” Can noted.
Finally, Borussia Dortmund managing director Lars Ricken think that Bayern Munich’s loss to FC Augsburg does represent one thing — hope.
“It’s a good sign for the Bundesliga that they’ve lost. It shows they’re beatable. We could have had a few more points if we hadn’t given them away in stoppage time. Now we need to focus on ourselves,” said Ricken.
Bayern Munich’s form this week might give its competitors hope, but the Bavarians have been resilient and not prone to prolonged slumps. For their sake, hopefully that still rings true.
