Gone are the days of Bayern Munich’s very French center-back grouping. Lucas Hernández and Benjamin Pavard have moved on to pastures new, and only Dayot Upamecano remains.
But the lingua franca remains French — or rather it is French once more. That’s because newcomer Jonathan Tah speaks it.
“[Upamecano] can speak very good German, but we communicate in French,” Tah explained in comments captured by Sky Germany (via @iMiaSanMia).
Tah has arrived on a free transfer from Bayer Leverkusen, and the German
international has never played outside of Germany in his youth or senior career. But the 29-year-old has quickly taken charge of a position in Vincent Kompany’s XI, and is already being touted as a leader in the backline.
Speaking French? That seems to just come with the trade. One could say Bayern’s new center-back just has that bit of, how you say, je ne sais quoi. Will it help him and Upamecano get in sync fast? Let’s hope so!
