The start of a brand new calendar year is the time of new resolutions and new beginnings, but often those are just performative, symbolic gestures. Nothing empty about this decision however!
Enzo Maresca has decided to leave Chelsea Football Club with immediate effect. His position at the club may have been under increasing pressure, but it still seemed relatively secure in the grand scheme of things. However, evidently, it had become untenable; he was quite unhappy, choosing to resign and walk away.
The news was made official today by the club, confirming his exit.
Chelsea Football Club and Head Coach Enzo Maresca have parted company.
During his time at the Club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Those achievements will remain an important part of the Club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions to the Club.
With key objectives still to play for across four competitions including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the Club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track.
We wish Enzo well for the future.
Maresca had been in charge for a year and a half, winning 55 games and collecting two trophies, both brand new for the club: the UEFA Conference League and an historic inaugural (for its newest format) FIFA Club World Cup. His 92 games in charge are the longest tenure of a BlueCo manager yet, and the third longest tenure of any manager in the past decade (Antonio Conte made it to 106; Thomas Tuchel to exactly 100).
So, here we go again.
