Pittsburgh Steelers veteran CB Darius Slay could return to the field this Sunday in Chicago, according to head coach Mike Tomlin. He suffered a concussion in their Week 11 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers
and missed last Sunday’s contest against the Bengals. When asked about the status of Slay, Tomlin was emphatic in his response:
“If healthy, Slay is going to play,” Tomlin said.
And while Tomlin did acknowledge that James Pierre would continue to be used, he made it clear that Slay will start.
The former All-Pro has regressed considerably this season, and Pierre has been a pleasant surprise over the past few weeks. He was a huge contributor in helping the Steelers hold the Bengals’ high-octane offense to just 12 points. JaMarr Chase and Tee Higgins, two of the best wideouts in the league, were held to just six catches for 91 yards, largely due in part to Pierre’s play.
It’ll be interesting to see how Slay’s potential return dictates Pierre’s role moving forward. The Steelers’ secondary has certainly played at a higher level since the trade for Kyle Dugger, with Jalen Ramsey moving to safety and Pierre being inserted at outside corner.
