The Los Angeles Chargers are welcoming their rookie class with open arms as they try to figure out where each of the new players will fit.
Wide receiver Brenen Thompson can be a nice, shiny new target for quarterback Justin Herbert in the offense, especially with new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel prioritizing speed.
“The fourth-round pick is going to get the most attention of any of the Chargers’ rookies because when he makes a play, it’s going to be on a highlight reel. Thompson ran a 4.26 40
at the combine, and he joins a receiving corps that could use a big-play threat. He will have to survive to make good on this, of course. He’s 5-foot-9 and 164 pounds,” The Athletic insider Josh Kendall wrote.
Thompson, who turns 23 in July, was the team’s fourth-round pick (No. 105 overall) out of Mississippi State. He caught 57 passes for 1,054 yards and six touchdowns, proving he can be a big-name player for a high-level SEC school.
This gives the Chargers someone that’s reminiscent of Tyreek Hill, who thrived at the beginning of his Miami Dolphins tenure under McDaniel. The speed can take the top off the defense, which the Chargers need in order to open things up for other wideouts like Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston.
