John Wall is calling it a career.
On Tuesday, the former Kentucky basketball standout announced his retirement, ending a playing career that saw him become one of the best players on the planet before injuries robbed him of his prime.
“Today, I’m stepping off the court, but not away from the game,” Wall said in a Twitter announcement. “Basketball will always be in my life, and new opportunities present themselves. I feel now is the time to walk confidently into my next chapter.”
Now 34 years old, Wall
played most of his career with the Washington Wizards after they made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 draft following a standout season at Kentucky. He went on to become a five-time All-Star point guard while earning Third-Team All-NBA honors in 2017. He was also named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2015.
Wall was also instrumental in putting Kentucky basketball back on the map after the program had endured one of its worst stretches ever prior to his arrival. Alongside John Calipari, Wall helped usher in a new era for the program that, from 2010-19, would feature seven Elite Eight trips, four Final Fours, and the 2012 NCAA Championship.
Thanks for the memories.
