Well, this turned out to be an eventful day after all. David Ornstein, writing for the Athletic, is now confirming that Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have agreed a fee for the transfer of Sandro Tonali in the amount of £92.5m, with an additional £7.5m in performance-based add-ons. This is far and away Tottenham’s record transfer fee.
I… I just… wow. Just wow. Sandro Tonali is a very good footballer but at fee is just so incredibly large. Comically big. Massive. Huge fee. I’m actually finding it hard to wrap my brain around it.
None of this really changes my opinion about this transfer. Sandro Tonali is a very good footballer, and he raises the floor of Spurs’ ability significantly. That’s unquestionably true. Is he good enough to warrant, if all conditions are met, £100m? Boy, I really really do not think so.
So on the one hand this is Tottenham showing AMBITION and FINANCIAL STRENGTH and all that jazz. It feels weird to think about Tottenham Hotspur spending this much money on ANYONE, much less a single foreign peak-age player. On the other hand, that is just so much money for a player who is basically an improved version of the midfielder profile we already have at the club. Is he that much better than, say, Rodrigo Bentancur? I have no answers. Maybe he is! I don’t think I wanted my club to spend this much money to find out.
And honestly, a midfield of Mateus Fernandes – Tonai – James Maddison could be fun as shit. This is definitely a statement of intent by Tottenham, but Tonali is also a player who is inextricably tied to Roberto De Zerbi. I wonder what might happen in a year and a half if De Zerbi decides to move on. I also wonder how this kind of outlay will affect other potential transfers, including that of Savinho which has been in limbo for a few weeks now. And ultimately — it’s not my money!
At any rate, this is a thing now. Tonali will join Fernandes and the other five players Spurs have already signed, and Newcastle get a Brinks truck full of cash. Is that good? I guess we’re going to find out!
