The Texas Rangers officially announced the signings of relief pitchers Chris Martin and Alexis Diaz this past week.
Diaz’s signing was announced on December 16 and is for one year for what has been reported
to be $1 million plus another $500K in potential incentives. Martin’s signing was announced on December 19 and is for one year for a reported $4 million, of which $2 million is deferred.
We talked about Diaz when it was first reported he was signing with the Rangers, and did the same with Martin. They continue the pattern from last offseason, when the Rangers opted to go with low-cost additions to construct the bullpen. Tyler Alexander and Rule 5 pick Carter Baumier are the other new additions whose cost is minimal.
Cots has the payroll at around $180 million at this point. Chris Young has previously said that payroll for 2026 is anticipated to be at least $200 million, and if we assume he’s talking about player salary payroll and not competitive balance tax payroll, the Rangers would seem to have at least another $20 million to spend. Texas still needs a starting pitcher and is reportedly also looking for a righthanded bat, and I suspect they probably aren’t done as far as relievers go.
The additions of Martin and Diaz mean the Rangers now have 39 players on their 40 man roster.
