Plenty of hate came Bo Nix’s way this season, but if you watched every game it would have been clear to all of the haters that Nix is a bigger reason the Denver Broncos finished the regular season 14-3
than any of them would admit. And finally, we have some analytics data that backs it up.
The people over at Sports Info Solutions (SIS) have determined which quarterbacks are the most valuable to their team’s success in 2025
.In sum: Broncos QB Bo Nix ranks No. 1 in our all-encompassing player value stat, Total Points. That contrasts with Nix’s poor ranks in many measurable quarterback skills.
Our system is primarily rewarding him for two things that paint over those flaws: 1) his avoidance of sacks, and 2) his high volume of short high-floor throws.
The Denver Broncos are set to host the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round, and while I’m sure many articles will be devoted to previewing the matchup, we’re instead taking the opportunity to do some housecleaning and investigate something that’s been bothering us for the last several weeks: Bo Nix ranking 1st in our Total Points metric.
Nix didn’t just beat out the best, he was the best by a wide margin. While many metrics show he has struggled at times, it has been his ability to avoid negative plays (sacks and turnovers) that set him far above the pack. That “high-floor value proposition as a baseline” as SIS called it, is a big reason why he is so valuable.
Where he has not been elite is on seep passing. Nix ended up with the sixth-most deep pass attempts and ranked 29th in catchable throws. As SIS noted in their breakdown, both Matthew Stafford and Drake Maye excelled in those passing situations. That fact is something that SIS intends to correct next season by hurting a quarterback more if their throw is not catchable as opposed to merely inaccurate.
We all know that the Broncos have had issues with the deep ball all season. Which is strange because they were decent in that category in 2024. At the end of the day, Nix is a second-year quarterback still figuring things out. While doing so, he’s also guided the Broncos to a 14-3 record and the top seed in the AFC. We can’t really complain about those results, now can we? But there is certainly room for improvement.
