The Texas Rangers and Bruce Bochy “mutually agree” that Bochy will not return as manager in 2026, the team has announced. The team says Bochy has been “offered a front office role to remain with the Rangers in an advisory
capacity.”
Bochy joined the Rangers on a three year deal prior to the 2023 season, a year that ended with the Rangers winning a World Series. The past two seasons have not gone as well, however, and the team brought in Skip Schumaker, who was the manager of the Miami Marlins in 2023 and 2024, into a front office role where he has been viewed as the team’s manager in waiting. The previous manager in waiting, Wil Venable, was hired by the Chicago White Sox as their manager last offseason.
Bochy wasn’t under contract beyond this season, so this isn’t technically a firing or a resignation. However, Bob Melvin was just fired by the San Francisco Giants, where Bochy coached Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey for most of Posey’s career, and one has to wonder if Bochy isn’t planning on heading to the Bay Area — particularly if, as has been suggested, the Rangers are looking to cut payroll this offseason.
I suspect we will start hearing pretty soon how much of this is Bochy wanting to do something else and how much is the organization wanting a new voice.
