Thomas Müller may have begun a new chapter away from Bayern Munich in 2025, but the legendary forward is approaching life in Major League Soccer with the same competitive mindset that defined his career in Germany. While many wondered what his ambitions would be after leaving the only club he had ever represented professionally, Müller made it clear that his focus remains firmly on winning.
“Next year is a transitional season, which will only last six months due to the switch to the European season starting
in 2027/28. From a long-term perspective, that might actually suit me better than another year and a half starting now,” Müller told RAN. “Everything is still up in the air, as it always is, because I’m someone who deliberately doesn’t rule anything out. Why should I? If I’m feeling great in the fall and things are going well with the team, then I could really see myself confirming that supposed success and simply not leaving this group.
“My goals for this season are very clear: I want to win the Supporters’ Shield — the regular-season title — because that’s what matters most to me in the long run. You always need a little luck in the playoffs. We lost the MLS Cup in the final last year, but I hope we can go one better this time. That’s what we’re working toward, and we’ll see how it goes.”
Müller’s comments reveal two things. First, he is keeping an open mind about how long his MLS adventure could last. Rather than setting a firm departure date, he is willing to let his performances and enjoyment dictate his future.
Second, and perhaps more importantly, his priorities have not changed. Individual milestones have never been what defined Müller. Instead, he has always been driven by team success, whether it was lifting Bundesliga titles, the UEFA Champions League, or the FIFA World Cup.
Now, that same mentality has crossed the Atlantic. Müller is not in MLS for a farewell tour — he is there to help his club lift trophies. Anyone who watched his Bayern Munich career should not be surprised by that attitude.
