Newcastle United has reportedly revived its interest in Atalanta center-back Giorgio Scalvini, with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur also joining the race for one of Serie A’s highest-rated young defenders.
The Magpies have tracked Scalvini for more than a year, and a fresh report from The Sun claims they have already contacted the 22-year-old’s representatives as they continue searching for defensive reinforcements this summer.
According to The Sun, Newcastle has approached Scalvini’s camp to discuss
the financial aspects of a potential deal, while the club’s sporting director has also been briefed on the situation.
“Giorgio Scalvini has emerged as a top defensive target for three Premier League clubs,” the report says. “SunSport understands that Chelsea, Tottenham, and Newcastle are closely monitoring the Atalanta centre-back and have directly approached his representatives to enquire about a deal.”
After Tutto Atalanta reported the Serie A side’s willingness to part ways with Scalvini for around £39 million, The Sun reports that Atalanta will only listen to offers of around £42 million, with Newcastle considering an opening bid worth approximately £34 million.
According to The Sun, Scalvini is interested in playing in the Premier League, making a transfer to Newcastle, Chelsea, or Tottenham likely.
“It is understood that Scalvini wants a move to the Premier League, which means personal terms are not expected to be an issue,” the report says.
The Sun also reported that Newcastle’s recruitment team is targeting a young center-back capable of making an immediate impact while offering long-term upside, whose profile Scalvini fits.
The defender, who made 30 appearances in all competitions for Atalanta last season, already has eight international caps with Italy’s senior squad under his belt.
