A little more than a month after 2027 four-star Rocky River (Ohio) High safety Tristin Hughes announced an offer from Michigan, plans have been set for him to officially visit in June.
Hughes shared with Maize n Brew that his official will be from June 12-14. It’ll be his first time on campus.
“I’m really starting to wind down and take deep looks into my decision,” Hughes said at Battle 7v7 Nationals in Nashville. “Early playing time is going to be one of the big factors, as well as the general area
and education (opportunities) at the school.”
Proximity to his hometown will also play into where Hughes commits to, as Ricky River — a suburb of Cleveland — is roughly two hours away from Ann Arbor. Michigan safeties coach Tyler Stockton offered Hughes, which immediately propelled the program into the junior’s top list.
“It was definitely a big deal,” Hughes said. “Growing up, especially being from Ohio, you always know about The Game. So just them extending the offer was definitely a moment in my life where I was really happy.”
Hughes and Stockton are in communication at least once a week since the offer as they continue to build a rapport.
“He’s pretty good,” Hughes said of Stockton. “Talking to coaches nowadays, you just want to be comfortable. So once I get that feeling and feel like everything is falling (into place), then it just feels good.”
The Wolverines have employed a familiar presence in recent memory throughout the state of Ohio by signing prospects native south of the border, further highlighting the bitter rivalry with Ohio State on-and-off the field. That’s something Hughes recognizes when well known Michigan players like Jordan Marshall and Charles Woodson are brought up in conversation.
“I know that they’re a very prestigious school when it comes to academics and football,” Hughes said. “Having an opportunity to go there and play there is just amazing.”
Hughes originally was going to announce a commitment on his birthday at the beginning of April, but he pushed it back in order to provide himself more time to decide. Other official visits he has locked in alongside Michigan are Kentucky and Virginia Tech. Rounding out Hughes’ top list are Miami, Auburn and Purdue.
“I’m definitely excited to get up there and see things,” Hughes said.
Hughes is the No. 250 overall prospect in the country, according to Rivals. Meanwhile, 247Sports lists Hughes as the No. 20 safety nationally and the No. 10 player in Ohio.
