Robert Lewandowski could see the writing on the wall.
This was the right time to take matters into his own hands, say goodbye to Barcelona, and find a new challenge as his epic career enters the homestretch.
Above all else, Lewandowski is a professional.
His instincts and abilities on the field were never in doubt, but equally important were the day to day habits, and the intelligence he had to make the right career moves at the right time. That’s what explains the longevity, something so many great
footballers struggle to achieve.
It was a brave decision to join Barcelona in 2022, at a time when the club was on the downswing. Lewandowski, however, never harbored any doubts. He knew his time at Bayern Munich had run its course, and he saw something in Xavi as a manager that things could turn around at the Camp Nou. He wanted to be a part of that project.
Four years later, Barcelona are back among the elite in Europe, and for that, Lewandowski deserves a lot of thanks and appreciation.
Just by coming to Barcelona at the time when he did was a signal to the world not to write off the mighty Blaugrana so quickly. Frankly, it was an injection of confidence into the players and figures who were at the club.
In his first season, Barcelona went on to win La Liga. He may not have been the unstoppable striker that struck fear into the hearts of opponents that he once was, but over his four seasons, Lewandowski scored over 100 goals. The Blaugrana got everything from the Polish superstar that they could have asked for.
He was also a role model in the dressing room. He wasn’t the captain, but he was someone the many young players could look up to. Lewandowski is a man of high character because he was always accountable to himself as a player, and to his team.
Coaches need players like that around who can help them manage behaviors and cultivate a winning culture. Compare Barcelona and Real Madrid not just by what we’ve seen on the field over the past few seasons, but by what has gone on off of it.
For Lewandowski, three La Liga titles in his four years at the club says it all. Job well done. He is without a doubt a Barcelona legend. His influence was everywhere.
Going into the future, Barcelona not only need to replace Lewandowski as a center forward, but also as a leader.
The former will be tough, but the latter will be an even greater challenge.
Let’s just hope that the people in charge understand exactly what they’re losing when Lewandowski is gone.
It’s a given that future success depends on having the best players in the world. It also requires finding players with character. One without the other simply won’t do.
Thanks for teaching us that lesson Robert Lewandowski.
