Eduardo “Sugar” Nunez put Christopher Diaz down two times en route to retaining his IBF super featherweight title by unanimous decision in a fantastic action main event from Los Mochis, Mexico.
Nunez (29-1, 27 KO) won on scores of 116-110, 117-109, and 117-109, which could be argued as too wide, as “Pitufo” Diaz (30-6, 19 KO) put up a tremendous, all-heart effort, giving everything he had to win his first world title at age 30.
It wasn’t to be, and fairly enough. Nunez, 28, put Diaz down twice in the
seventh round, and even that should have been enough to make an ultimate difference on the cards.
Nunez was in control of the face when he pressured, but allowed Diaz into it frequently by boxing off the back foot, an odd tactical choice on the surface that kept the Puerto Rican underdog in the fight. Nunez also ate a lot of hard shots from Diaz, who isn’t a big puncher and couldn’t make quite the dent he needed to truly turn the tide in his favor.
“Mexico vs Puerto Rico is always a war, and Christopher is a warrior and that’s what he brought today,” Nunez said after the fight.
