Maryland softball hosted the Terrapin Invitational over the weekend, and put in a much-needed performance to get back above .500 on the season. The Terps swept their four-game slate, beating Syracuse, 6-3, on Friday; Providence, 15-8, and Fairfield, 8-1, on Saturday; and UMBC, 8-0, on Sunday.
Maryland entered the weekend at 6-9, with this weekend serving as the season’s home opener.
Its revival was led by strong showings from its pitching staff.
Elisea Wiegand got off on the wrong foot in her start Friday against the Orange, but senior Keira Bucher came in for 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to close out the game. A day later, Wiegland and Bucher contributed in the win over Providence; with Bucher notching a five-out save.
The Terps’ last two pitching starts of the series were complete games. Junior Caitlin Olensky tossed seven innings of one-run, five-hit, eight-strikeout ball against Fairfield in the second half of the doubleheader before Wiegland returned Sunday for a one-hit shutout against the Retrievers.
Maryland is now 10-9, with one more midweek matchup — against Delaware on Wednesday — before Big Ten play kicks off.

No. 6-seed Maryland women’s basketball will play the winner of No. 11-seed Oregon and No. 14-seed Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament second round on Wednesday.
