The 2026 NFL schedule release is underway, and for Detroit Lions fans there are always a couple of things that stick out when the games are fully announced. Fans run to see when the team’s bye week will be, scour to find out how many primetime games there are, and one of the most important developments is which team the Lions will face on Thanksgiving.
The Thanksgiving Day classic has been one of the most important days of the year for Lions fans. Even during the lean years, it was the one day out
of the season when the Lions got the spotlight, for better or for worse. It’s been a time-honored tradition, and it’s been an opportunity to create cherished memories with family.
In short, it’s a very important day.
So today’s Question of the Day is:
Who do you want to be the Lions’ Thanksgiving Day opponent?
My answer: I’m going to operate under the assumption that the rumors are true that Detroit will play the New England Patriots in Germany, leaving eight possible opponents for the holiday game:
- Packers
- Vikings
- Bears
- Saints
- Giants
- Jets
- Buccaneers
- Titans
Personally, I’m pretty sick of the divisional matchups on Thanksgiving. I get the appeal of raising the stakes in a playoff race, but Detroit has now played a divisional opponent on Thanksgiving five straight times and nine out of the last 10 years. So let’s get someone new.
Personally, I’d like to see Lions vs. Bucs. Tampa and Detroit have played some epic games against each other as of recently, and this game could still have the allure of a big NFC matchup, provided both teams play to expectations in 2026.
The only downside to the Lions and Buccaneers playing on Thanksgiving is it would take away the opportunity for a great primetime matchup, but quite frankly, I’m sick of all the night games anyways. So this is actually more of a positive for me personally.
