It’s been a while since Missouri trekked to Norman, Oklahoma for a football game. More than 14 years to be exact. On September 24th, 2011 the Tigers opened their Big 12 season with a loss to the #1 ranked
Sooners by the score of 38-28. It was actually a 17 point lead until a late 4th quarter touchdown by James Franklin cut into the final margin, but I’m sure we all remember 2011 as a year of building.
These two programs are in very different places now, but the one stat which continues to be true: Missouri has not won in Norman since 1966. Technically OU forfeited the 1972 game they won 17-6, but that’s a run of 18 straight losses. They got close in 2007, but otherwise there are some lopsided contests during that tenure. Suffice to say, expecting to win in Norman isn’t something that usually accompanies the Tigers program. Or anyone for that matter.
OU has lost just 13 games at home in the last 10 years. 7 of those have happened in the last three years under Brent Venables. But Venables and Oklahoma have recovered a bit from a very disappointing start to their SEC story, with their 8-2 record this season.
Since taking over in Norman, Venables has recorded two 6 wins seasons, which is two more than OU has handled since Bob Stoops was hired in 1999. But he’s also got one 10 win season, and if OU can beat Missouri tomorrow, and take out LSU in their final game, that will be a second 10 win season. This one is far more impactful, since it’s in the SEC and he can point to wins over Michigan, Texas, Tennessee, and Alabama. Whereas two years ago the Sooners beat, well they beat Texas. Then a whole lot of bad.
Missouri, when healthy this year, are a lot closer to the Sooners than the spread might indicate. Running the football has been a strength for the Tigers, while stopping the run has been the Sooners strength. Too bad it looks like the Tigers won’t have a robust passing attack to fall back on. But as usual, check out the Preview of the Sooners from Nate here.
