Roy Makaay would love to see Harry Kane win the Ballon d’Or, and the former Bayern Munich striker believes the England captain has every right to be considered among the favorites.
Makaay knows exactly what it takes to be an elite goalscorer at Bayern Munich. The Dutch striker played for the club from 2003 to 2007, scoring 103 goals in 189 competitive appearances. He won back-to-back Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal doubles in 2005 and 2006 and remains a beloved figure among Bayern Munich supporters.
Now,
Makaay believes Kane deserves serious consideration for the biggest individual prize in football.
“If he wins it, he deserves it, because the season he had was tremendous, but in football you never know. The Ballon d’Or is also a matter of taste. I think there are several players in the running, but Kane is one of the main contenders. If you score as many goals for your club and country as he did, it’s very normal that people speak about you as one of the candidates. I would love for him to win it, and if he does, he would deserve it, but we’ll have to see in October,” Makaay told BuLiNews.com (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Makaay also understands that goals alone do not determine the Ballon d’Or. There are several outstanding candidates, and ultimately, voters will decide which individual season deserves the recognition.
But after another extraordinary campaign, Kane has certainly given them a strong case.
And Makaay, who once terrorized defenses himself, would clearly love to see another Bayern Munich striker lift the trophy.
