Yesterday saw the final teams that hadn’t played their first World Cup game finally get on the field. Portugal scored first against DR Congo and most people probably assumed it would be a 3-0 or 4-0 scoreline before too long, but DR Congo battled back, scored an equalizer, and went toe-to-toe with Portugal, earning a 1-1 draw. England and Croatia traded goals in a back-and-forth first-half battle before England pulled away in the second half for a 4-2 win. Ghana left it 0-0 with Panama all the way until
the 95th minute when Ghana scored their winner. Colombia got the early lead against Uzbekistan, who equalized, only for Colombia to finish 3-1 winners.
Now that everyone has played, we do it all again. Today we return to Groups A and B, where we started the tournament. The opening match features Czechia and South Africa, who both lost their opening games. South Africa lost the World Cup opener to Mexico 0-2 (and lost two of their players to red cards, who are suspended for this match). Czechia took a 1-0 lead over South Korea before giving it up for a 1-2 loss. Based on the opening matches Czechia surely seems favored to win this one, but that has meant almost nothing in the tournament results so far.
The second game features Switzerland against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Group B. Both teams drew their openers, Switzerland with Qatar and Bosnia with Canada. Switzerland will be really disappointed to have dropped points against Qatar, and will be looking to pick up all three today before they play Canada to finish the group.
It is Canada and Qatar in our third game. Canada should be disappointed with their opening draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina (although at least Canada picked up their first-ever World Cup point), and looking to pick up all three against Qatar. We’ll see if the Qataris can surprise the Canucks like they did the Swiss.
The late game features Mexico and South Korea fighting for pole position in Group A. Both of them won their openers. South Korea’s win was a bit more impressive (South Africa didn’t put up that much of a fight against Mexico, red cards excepted), but now they have to prove it against each other.
So, what will the games have in store for us today? Stick around, drop your comments, and have a great time.
