Dusty May is a god damn wizard.
After beating San Diego State by 30 points on Monday, the Michigan Wolverines beat the No. 21 Auburn Tigers by 30 points and No. 12 Gonzaga by 40 points to take home the crown
(and some NIL cash) from the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas.
The Wolverines made history in a couple different ways after the win over Gonzaga on Wednesday night, as Michigan is the first team in the AP Poll era (1948-49 is when that began) to have back-to-back 30-point wins against ranked opponents.
And that’s not all — the Wolverines are also the first team over the last 50 years to win consecutive games by 30 or more points against teams that made last year’s NCAA Tournament.
What makes this win even more impressive is what Gonzaga did before, as they blew out Maryland, 100-61, the night before, and also beat No. 8 Alabama by 10 points on Monday. After being humbled by Michigan, Auburn beat No. 14 St. John’s by 11 points on Wednesday, making the Wolverines’ win over the Tigers even more impressive than it already was.
The Wolverines are now the No. 1 team in the KenPom rankings, which is the first time that Michigan has ever held the No. 1 spot on KenPom. Even after the blowout loss, Gonzaga is still the No. 5 team on KenPom.
Speaking of KenPom, and just to contextualize these three wins just a bit more…
May and the Wolverines are cooking up something really special early on this season. Michigan will be back in action next Saturday, Dec. 6, at home to open up Big Ten play against Rutgers.
