The signing of Milos Kerkez last summer was a reminder of the cruel and inevitable passage of time, signalling Liverpool’s intention to plan for a future without stalwart left back Andy Robertson as the Scotland
international crept into his 30s and began to show signs of perhaps slowing down a little bit.
So far, Kerkez has failed to convince as his replacement and Robertson has reestablished himself as the Reds’ best option for the position, but with the player set to turn 32 in the spring and with his contract expiring at the end of the current season it seems inevitable the Scot will be moving on next summer.
The natural speculation might have Robertson still looking to play high level football, and one could easily for example imagine a move to Italy and Serie A. Transfer chatter, though, has him looking to head further north rather than exploring the continent. It has him planning a return to Scotland.
According to TeamTalk, Celtic is the club Robertson has his heart set on—and he wants to join them while he’s still good enough to make a significant impact both with the club and in Scottish football more generally. It was also the club he got his start at, playing in the youth ranks until the age of 15.
However, at the time Robertson was cut, considered too small by Celtic’s academy coaches. He soon joined Queens Park Rangers instead. If the rumours are true, though, it seems as though he hasn’t held on to any hard feelings from that, and if he wants to go home, well, we’ll wish him all the best.
Still, it’s hard not to watch Robertson this season and think Liverpool’s best left back of the Premier League era—at an absolute minimum—still has it in him to make a significant impact with a club that has aspirations of being in the mix for Premier League and Champions League titles every season.
