For years now, I’ve made the case that Notre Dame has continually sold itself short with the amount of national championships that it claims. We all know the drill — Notre Dame only recognizes consensus national championships with its count, which is currently at 11.
We also know that in the 80’s, the Alabama Crimson Tide decided to add a number of titles to their total while claiming that each is one that the NCAA recognizes. They aren’t exactly wrong, but it was out of the norm that many in college
football clung to back then.
The Auburn Tigers — in 2025 — have decided to follow that same path and added 4 new national championship titles to their recognized list.
I’m not outraged — I’m not even surprised. I am, however, still disappointed that Notre Dame hasn’t done the exact same thing with their 11 co-National Championships.

That’s 10. The 11th… well despite what we saw in the BCS National Championship Game against Alabama, one of the NCAA recognized services had Notre Dame ranked #1 — which is one of the same services that Auburn is using to claim more.
I’ve written about this many, many times, and the most comprehensive article about Notre Dame’s 22 National Championships is here at OFD.
Regardless of how you might sneer at Auburn or Alabama for this southern math, the same formula can (and should) be used in South Bend. There’s no reason to stand all high and mighty about it. After all, in 2025, we are supposed to be using new math and we are supposed to be more inclusive.
Throw them all in — ALL 22 — and let’s see what Auburn and Alabama have to say about it. This is still an SID world, and it’s still anything goes.
