49ers sign Robert Jones, top candidate to start at left guard despite injury and modest pedigree (paywall)
“A 2021 undrafted free agent, Jones, 6-foot-4 and 322 pounds, should be familiar with the 49ers’ system after he spent three seasons (2022-24) with then-Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, a former 49ers offensive coordinator and longtime assistant under head coach Kyle Shanahan.
In 2024, Jones made 17 of his 30 career starts, playing left guard, and he ranked 59th among 77 guards, according to
Pro Football Focus. Last year, he signed a one-year, $4.75 million contract with the Cowboys and there was speculation he could compete for the starting spot with All-Pro right guard Zack Martin retired. However, Dallas used the No. 12 overall pick on Alabama guard Tyler Booker to assume the role.
Jones’ neck injury meant he had no role in his lone season in Dallas. He was hurt during the first padded practice of training camp July 27 and placed on season-ending injured reserve Aug. 8.”
Are the 49ers done free-agent shopping? They shouldn’t be. Here’s why (paywall)
“However, what happens if the contract standoff becomes untenable and leads to Williams’ trade or release? The 49ers would need to have a plan to replace Williams at left tackle and could turn to the free-agent market given the lack of appealing first-string options on their current roster.
At the moment, a decent Plan B is available: Taylor Decker, 32, the No. 16 pick in 2016 who was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2024, remains unsigned after he requested his release from the Lions last month. Decker left Detroit, his employer for his first 10 seasons, because he refused to take a pay cut to lower his 2026 salary cap charge of more than $21 million. If the 49ers find themselves without Williams, they’d likely be willing to pony up for his services.”
Report: 49ers, Trent Williams aren’t ‘anywhere close’ in contract talks
“They aren’t anywhere close to a deal yet,” one source familiar with the situation told La Canfora, “and I don’t think anything happens unless the 49ers make a big move.”
49ers to host Texas Tech DE Romello Height on pre-draft visit
“Height is coming off his most productive season in 2025, when he recorded 38 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, and 10 sacks while starting all 14 games for Texas Tech. He also forced two fumbles and recovered one, earning first-team All-Big 12 honors.”
49ers had formal meeting with potential Day 2 draft pick
“Melo noted that Stukes stood out on film for his coverage instincts and physicality, making him an intriguing option in the 2026 NFL Draft.”
